CiteProof is a reference-checking tool. Its results are based on third-party database records and automated matching, and are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate.
What the tool can establish
The website compares your references with records returned by Crossref, DBLP, Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex. The CLI also queries arXiv. CiteProof does not independently certify that a work exists, that every bibliographic field is correct, or that the work is scientifically reliable. Listing or linking to a database does not imply its endorsement of this tool.
Accuracy and coverage limits
Results may be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. Missing records, inaccurate metadata, different publication versions, approximate matching, rate limits and service failures can cause false positives, false negatives or inconclusive results. No guarantee of accuracy, completeness, availability or fitness for a particular purpose is made.
“Verified” means the checker found a database match. “Likely hallucinated” is a prompt for review, not proof of fabrication or academic misconduct. A failed query, an unindexed web page, or a difference from an author's recommended citation does not by itself establish that a reference is false. Original-page and search links are for manual review and are not automatically verified.
Your review remains necessary
Check original publications, publisher or author pages, model cards and recommended citations before relying on the results. Do not use CiteProof alone to make publication, grading, research-integrity or other consequential decisions. You remain responsible for checking references and for decisions made using the output.
Warranty and liability
The tool is provided as is, without warranties. To the extent permitted by applicable law, its authors and maintainers disclaim liability for losses or damages arising from its use or reliance on its results. Nothing in this notice excludes or limits liability that applicable law does not permit to be excluded or limited.
The CLI's software terms are set out in its MIT license. A repository disclaimer is also available. See the privacy notice for the website's data handling.
